Authorities in Florida are investigating a tragic double murder-suicide that has left a coastal community in shock after a mother allegedly killed her two children before dying by suicide.
Deputies from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office responded on Thursday, February 26, after receiving a call from the children’s father, who was traveling abroad and became concerned when he could not reach his wife or children.
When first responders arrived at the family’s home in the Lakewood Ranch neighborhood, they encountered what officials later described as a violent scene. Evidence of a crime was reportedly discovered outside the residence before deputies entered the home.
Inside, authorities found Monika Rubacha, 44, and her two children — Josh James, 14, and Emma James, 11 — deceased in separate rooms, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
Investigators believe Rubacha fatally shot her children before taking her own life. The medical examiner has not yet issued an official ruling on the exact cause and manner of death.
Randy Warren, public information officer for the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, described the situation as devastating for both law enforcement and the children’s father, who was returning from South America at the time and had to be informed of the tragedy upon arrival.
“This is a horrible, horrible thing for the deputies to have to witness,” Warren said, adding that the emotional toll on the father is unimaginable.
According to authorities, the family had moved to the Lakewood Ranch area from Missouri approximately three years ago. Deputies reported that they had never previously been called to the home, and no prior incidents involving law enforcement had been documented at the residence.
Officials stated that investigators believe there was evidence of planning involved in the incident, though they declined to elaborate on specific details as the investigation remains ongoing.
“What happened inside this home is something that maybe nobody could have predicted,” Warren said. “We really don’t know what led up to that.”
Neighbors in the community expressed shock and disbelief, describing the family as quiet and private. The tragedy has left residents shaken in what is typically considered a peaceful neighborhood.
The investigation remains active as authorities continue to gather evidence and seek to understand the circumstances that led to the deaths.
